An engineering approach towards the design of an innovative compact photo-reactor for antibiotic removal in the frame of laboratory and pilot-plant scale

Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), in particular heterogeneous photocatalysis, have been considered as a promising method to remove antibiotics without generating hazardous intermediates. In this work, an innovative compact photoreactor was designed and tested for the degradation of antibiotic Flumequine. The system consisted textile woven from both luminous photocatalytically active fibers. fibers LED-type optical photocatalytic consist impregnated with TiO2. This configuration allowed optimization contact between catalyst, pollutant, light source. surface morphology, elemental composition properties photo-active fabric were characterized by SEM-EDX irradiance measurements. effectiveness compared two conventional processes: suspended TiO2, immobilized TiO2 on cellulosic paper. specific rate obtained 28 times higher than that observed slurry reactor 65 case supported Luminous also showed efficient performance terms mineralization per Watt consumed values exceeding 77 419 those cellulose paper, respectively. new improved compactness 3 paper system. Langmuir-Hinshelwood model fibers-based reduced mass transfer immobilization approaches. Additionally, extrapolation process pilot scale successfully performed. excellent performances rate, consumed, compactness, energy consumption, reusability make textiles attractive alternative reactors’ design removal water wastewater.
